Moved House Recently? Unload and Unpack with Stress

Moving into a new house is great. You now have a new three-dimensional 'canvas' to decorate as you see fit, and if you are typically house proud then you will probably have a great time finding new places for potted plants and furniture. However, after successfully transporting all your worldly possessions into your new place of residence, you are now confronted with the task of having to unload and unpack, and to establish some kind of order. In this article we provide you with a few tips about how to make moving a stress free process.

Staying Organized

Avoid asking your children for help. They are usually more interested in playing and uncovering items they may not have seen in awhile. Arrange for them to be occupied with something they enjoy away from your organised sprawl.

Place marked boxes in the rooms where you think the items will remain.

Try to avoid a pile-up of trash. Create an area that (a courtyard is ideal) can be used to store packaging materials until you can dispose of them appropriately at a later stage.

Unpack the large items first. In most cases, you can't unpack the smaller items until the furniture has been unloaded.

Planning

It is probably not going to be possible to unpack the entire contents of a house in one sitting. Therefore, there is no point trying to a rush job of it.

Don't be afraid to delegate tasks to friends or family who have volunteered to help you. While you may have to reorganize a few things after they are finished, they will still save you a lot of work.

  • Try organizing a few convenience meals in advance. Make sure you have enough to feed all of those that have spent time helping you.
  • Unpack the items that you need the most first. Towels and general linen should be at the top of the list so that you are able to clean yourself if you work up a sweat whilst unpacking.
  • Rotate between rooms that need to be unpacked. This will help make the process a little less boring.
  • Be on the lookout for broken or damaged items whilst you unpack. Once everything has been unpacked you should compare what you now have with the inventory list that you put together before the move. The sooner you file any insurance claims; the sooner things can be resolved.
